The DMT-85 is a flexible 8-stage sequencer with multiple play-modes and multiple steps per stage, as well as a cool split mode giving you the ability to create more complex sequences than other sequencers!

It's ideal for playing with on-the-fly for ever evolving sequences, and multiple steps per stage means you can live out your Tangerine Dream / Berlin School sequencer fantasies!

Controls, Inputs, Outputs

Per Step Controls

Voltages (Knobs) - Select the required voltage for each Stage of the sequencer, ranging from 0 to 5 volts.

Stages (Knobs) - Select the number of steps to play for each Stage of the Sequencer, ranging from 1 to 8. As an example, setting a Stage to 4 steps means that stage will play 4 times before moving to the next one.

Mode (Sliders) - Select the Gate Out function for each stage of the sequencer:

  • Off (Circle)- Gate will stay off on this stage.
  • Single (Single Rectangle)- Gate will go HIGH only for the first step in the stage.
  • All (Four rectangles)- Gate will go HIGH for each step in the stage.
  • Every 2nd (Rect, Dash, Rect, Dash)- Gate will go HIGH for every 2nd step in the stage (step 1, step 3, step 5, step 7).
  • Every 3rd (Rect, Dash, Dash, Rect)- Gate will go HIGH for every 3rd step in the stage (step 1, step 4, step 7).
  • Every 4th (Rect, Dash, Dash, Dash)- Gate will go HIGH for every 4th step in the stage (step 1, step 5).
  • Random (Question Mark)- Gates will go HIGH at random for each step in the stage.
  • Long (Big Rectangle)- Gate will go HIGH on the first step on the stage, and stay high through all steps in the stage.

Glide (Button) - Selects whether or not the step will smoothly glide to this step from the previous step. Glide time is controlled by the GLIDE TIME control.

Sequencer Controls

Play (Knob) - Selects the Sequence Play Mode:

  • Forward (Right-pointing triangle) - Plays forwards.
  • Backwards (Left-pointing triangle) - Plays backwards, starting from the last stage of the sequence (based on the LENGTH and SPLIT controls).
  • Ping-pong (Bow-tie) - Plays the sequence forwards and backwards alternately.
  • Random (Question Mark) - Picks a new step at random for each step.
  • Fixed Length (Rectangle) - Will play exactly 4 multiplied by the LENGTH value. For example, if set to LENGTH of 3, it will play 12 steps (not stages), before restarting.

Length (Knob) - Sets the length of the sequence in steps, from 1 to 8.

Split (Switch) - Turning Split Mode on splits the main sequence into two sub-sequences, A and B, with the split point defined by the SPLIT POINT control. How these play is dependent on the PLAY and RPT controls:

  • Forward (Right-pointing triangle) - Sequence A will play forwards exactly A RPT times, then play Sequence B forwards exactly B RPT times, before starting again.
  • Backwards (Left-pointing triangle) - Sequence A will play backwards exactly A RPT times, then play Sequence B backwards exactly B RPT times, before starting again.
  • Ping-pong (Bow-tie) - Sequence A will play forwards and then backwards exactly A RPT times, then play Sequence B forwards and then backwards exactly B RPT times, before starting again.
  • Random (Question Mark) - Picks a sub-sequence at random and plays it forwards fully, before randomly selecting another sub-sequence.
  • Fixed Length (Rectangle) - As per Normal/Forward Modes, but will restart once it has played exactly 4 multiplied by the LENGTH value.

Split Point (Knob) - Controls the split point of the two sub-sequences. For example, setting to 5 and playing in FORWARD mode gives you the following sequences 1 2 3 4 | 5 6 7 8.

A Rpt / B Rpt (Knobs) - Determines how many times each sub-sequence will repeat before moving on. For example, with a SPLIT POINT of 5, A RPT is 3 and B RPT is 1, you get the following stage sequence: 1 2 3 4 | 1 2 3 4 | 1 2 3 4 | 5 6 7 8 before repeating again.

Clock/Sync Timing (Drop Down) - DMT-85 allows you to either use a CLOCK signal from an LFO or clock generator, as well as the SYNC In signal for synchronizing with your DAW, without the use of the Sync Divider module. Select CLK for an ordinary 1 step per pulse, or a choice of 1/1 to 1/32 Sync Signals for DAW integration.

Gate Length (Knob) - Selects the gate length to output. Useful as you can send DMT-85 trig signals, and will generate GATE signals from that. Note that if the GATE LENGTH is longer than the time between steps, the GATE OUT will stay HIGH, giving you smooth legato notes.

Clk / Sync In (Input) - Send in either a TRIG, GATE or SYNC signal as explained in the CLOCK/SYNC TIMING section above.

Glide Time (Knob) - Determines the glide time for stages that have GLIDE activated.

CV Out (Output) - Outputs the given Voltage based on the current stage.

Gate Out (Output) - Outputs either a LOW or HIGH signal based on stage and GATE MODE settings.

Tips & Tricks

Set all Stages to 2 or 4 Steps each, and to SINGLE mode. Then by changing one or more stages to ALL or EVERY 2ND... et voila! Ratcheting! Easy peasy.

Assign the LENGTH and RPT controls to a MIDI controller for some ace live improvisation.

As we're in the Virtual world, Duplicate the DMT-85 and send to another oscillator, but change the LENGTH slightly so you get a shifting landscape of sequenced tones! Or go completely nuts and criss-cross the two. Send the CV of Sequencer 1 and the GATE of Sequencer 2 to one voice, and CV of Seq 2 and the Gate of Seq 1 to another. Evolving sequences that go on for days!
