ECHOVERB2 - A virtual analog space station!

ECHOVERB2 is the result of revisiting quite an old module design and incorporating some requests and suggestions from our customers.

At its heart, ECHOVERB2 is an analog-flavoured stereo chorus, delay and reverb effects processor that can enhance the sound of pretty much anything you throw at it. As all the effects are stereo, we recommend using both outputs. If your source signal is mono, use one of the inputs, and it will be duplicated at the other.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT MONITORING - Depending on settings, output levels can get hot and / or build-up over time so we’ve added metering at the input and output stages. If the LEDs above the meters light red, then you might want to cool things off a little so they return to a healthy blue! We’ve also added convenient GAIN trim knobs at both stages that allow you to attenuate levels between -6dB and +3dB.

CHORUS

DEPTH sets the amount of modulation of the chorus effect.

RATE sets the rate of modulation of the chorus effect.

TONE can be used to make the chorus effect darker or brighter, with the centre position providing a warm analog-like tone.

MIX varies the amount of chorus effect added to the original signal.

ECHO

ECHOVERB2 has two stereo ping-pong delays and their delay times are related by a mathematical ratio according to the TIME and RATIO controls. The two delays ping-pong in opposite directions for a nice stereo effect!

TIME sets the primary delay time up to 8000ms and RATIO sets the secondary delay time as a fraction of the primary. For example, if the TIME is set to 4000ms and the RATIO is 75% (or 3/4) then the secondary delay time will be 3000ms.

The buttons next to the RATIO control allow you to quickly set some common ratio values. The GOLDEN ratio is particularly useful for “scatter” type delay effects. The 3/4 and 2/3 settings can also be musically pleasing as they correspond to triplets and dotted note relationships.

For a standard ping-pong delay, set the RATIO to 1/2 = 50%, and set the delay TIME to double the time you actually want, e.g., 1000ms with a RATIO of 1/2 will give you a traditional 500ms stereo ping-pong delay.

Interesting results can also be achieved with the “imperfect” values. For example, set the RATIO to 52% and set the REGEN high, and the two delays will appear to gradually drift out of sync.

REGEN controls the feedback level / delay repeats, up to infinite repeats - see note about monitoring above and watch your levels!

MOD adds a variable amount of stereo modulation to the delay repeats only.

TONE can be used to make the repeats darker / softer or brighter, not unlike a vintage analog delay.

GRIT adds a variable amount of tube-like drive and warmth to the repeats only. This control can be used to add saturation and a little compression to the delay repeats. Sometimes adding just a little can really bring a sound to life - adjust to taste! If you need more drive applied at the GRIT stage, try boosting the input gain and reducing the output gain to avoid clipping.

MIX varies the balance between the original input and effect signals, from completely dry, to completely wet.

REVERB SECTION

SIZE determines the emulated size of the reverb space, from small room, to large hall.

MOD adds a variable amount of stereo modulation to the reverb effect.

TONE can be used to make the reverb darker / softer, or brighter / more metallic, not unlike a vintage analog spring or plate reverb unit.

MIX varies the balance between the original input and effect signals, from completely dry, to completely wet.

We hope you find ECHOVERB2 useful and inspiring in a spacey way!
