F_AMBZ — Ambient Shimmer Reverb
Overview
F_AMBZ is a stereo ambient reverb with integrated shimmer pitch processing and motion modulation. It is designed to move beyond traditional algorithmic reverbs by combining multi-line diffusion, matrix feedback mixing, stereo rotation, and grain-based pitch shifting inside the feedback path. The result ranges from subtle space enhancement to evolving, extended ambient washes.
Unlike conventional shimmer reverbs that simply place a pitch shifter after a reverb, F_AMBZ integrates pitch shifting directly into the feedback network. This allows pitch-shifted content to regenerate, diffuse, and interact with modulation over time, creating depth and movement rather than static repeats.
Signal Flow
Input → Pre-Delay → Early Diffusion → 4-Line Modulated Delay Matrix → Late Diffusion → Stereo Rotation → Shimmer Pitch Processing → Feedback Diffusion → Output
The shimmer processor operates within the feedback loop. As the reverb regenerates, pitch-shifted material is reinjected into the network, producing sustained harmonic clouds.
Controls
AMB
AMB is the main macro control. It simultaneously adjusts space size, decay length, feedback intensity, shimmer amount, and internal modulation scaling. Lower values produce tighter, shorter reverbs. Higher values open the space, extend decay, and increase shimmer density.
MIX
Controls the dry/wet balance. At 0% the signal remains dry. At 100% only the processed signal is heard.
COLOR
Adjusts internal damping filters. Lower settings produce darker, warmer tails. Higher settings allow more high-frequency shimmer and brightness.
MOTION
Controls internal modulation depth and rate. It affects delay-line modulation, stereo rotation, shimmer drift, and diffusion movement. At low settings the reverb is stable and smooth. At higher settings it becomes more animated and spatially active.
WIDTH
Adjusts stereo width of the wet signal. Lower values narrow the stereo image. Higher values increase side energy and spatial spread.
PRE
Sets pre-delay time before the reverb begins. Higher values create separation between the dry signal and the reverb onset.
SHIFT
Controls shimmer pitch amount. The center position produces no pitch shift. Turning clockwise shifts upward, turning counterclockwise shifts downward. Up to one octave is reached before additional interval layering is introduced (in Dual mode).
MODE (3-State Switch)
State 0: Normal — Forward pitch processing only.
State 1: Dual — Forward pitch plus an additional reverse grain layer for enhanced shimmer density.
State 2: Reverse — Main shimmer operates in reverse grain mode for a softer, swelling character.
CV Inputs
AMB CV
Modulates the macro space control.
COLOR CV
Modulates brightness and damping.
SHIFT CV
Modulates shimmer pitch amount. External attenuation modules can be used for scaling.
How F_AMBZ Creates Depth
The core of F_AMBZ is a 4-line modulated delay matrix. Each line has slightly different delay times and modulation characteristics. A Hadamard-style mixing matrix redistributes energy across lines, preventing simple rhythmic echoes and promoting a smooth field-like decay.
Late diffusion stages further smear reflections, while stereo rotation continuously shifts energy between left and right channels. Micro pitch drift inside the shimmer processor adds slow harmonic motion similar to high-end ambient processors.
Feedback and Stability
Decay values near maximum push the internal feedback very close to unity. However, continuous energy monitoring and smoothing ensure the reverb remains stable. If internal energy rises excessively, feedback is gently reduced to prevent runaway behavior. This allows extended tails without instability.
Usage Tips
• For subtle space: keep AMB low, MOTION low, SHIFT centered.
• For classic shimmer pads: increase AMB and SHIFT upward one octave.
• For evolving ambient washes: raise AMB and MOTION together.
• For darker cinematic textures: reduce COLOR and increase WIDTH.
• For reverse-like swelling textures: use Reverse mode with moderate SHIFT.
Design Philosophy
F_AMBZ is not a conventional room or hall reverb. It is an ambient processor built to create movement, harmonic regeneration, and evolving stereo fields. It is intended for pads, drones, cinematic textures, sound design, and experimental applications where space itself becomes part of the instrument.
Because shimmer operates inside the feedback network, pitch-shifted tones continue to diffuse and interact over time. This produces complex harmonic clouds rather than simple layered echoes.
Technical Notes
• Internal delay lines are continuously modulated to avoid metallic ringing.
• Diffusion stages prevent rhythmic repetition.
• Micro pitch drift enhances perceived depth.
• Denormal protection is applied to ensure CPU stability during long tails.
F_AMBZ is optimized for extended ambient processing while maintaining predictable behavior and stereo integrity.
