With mid-side processing, you can alter the wideness of a stereo signal and separately process the center from the elements of sound which are unique to the left or right sides. You can have your cake and eat it too, when you filter the center while letting the sides pass through unchanged, go extreme with reverb on the sides while leaving the middle perfectly clear, saturate the core while leaving detail on the sides, EQ the lower frequencies from the side while enhancing them in the center for improved focus, and plenty more.
This module can be used as a send/return loop from stereo to mid-side & back to stereo, and it can be split to convert between the two without converting back (you can even send the mid & side jacks right to the main outputs, send to the signals vsts for mid-side processing, and convert back with another instance of VM). With the optional, on-board amp, you can use it as a stereo amplifier while leaving your options open for interesting mid-side experimentation.
To use the device, be sure to have a stereo signal (a reverb before the amp or stereo samples will do the trick, otherwise the side signal will just be zero). Things are internally normalled so that you can go right to connecting the stereo outputs to the rest of your chain. You'll be able to tinker with mid and side volumes separately or with the tilt control to widen or narrow the sound. Connect an envelope to the amp if you'd like to use it with an envelope generator, or optionally use it to modulate the volume for tremolo. Phase and modulatable pan control give you options for purposeful cancellation (you could remove center instruments like bass and vocals) and movement.
Connect the mid & side output jacks through filters, reverbs, and other effects and back to the mid & side inputs to really make use of the module's strengths. Give each a different signal chain or different settings to accomplish subtle mix improvements and wild experimentation alike. You can leave either the mid or sides to their internal normalization while running an effects loop on the other.
By putting a mastering technique into the center of modular synthesis, you can go a lot further than molding a sound to get inside and tear it apart in exciting ways.
