The jewel of the MM-900 bundle, the MM-970A Programmable Sequencer is a cross between the 960 Programmable Sequencer and the 314 Clocked Sequential Control from the 1970s, with a couple of additions.
The MM-970A is a 3 row x 8 step sequencer with an internal or tempo sync'd clock, 6 different step modes, per-step length/ ratcheting, and even the ability to use the sequencer as a rudimentary complex oscillator.
Quick Start
- Set the Row 1 CV dials to your chosen values
- Connect the CV A output to the pitch Input of your chosen Oscillator.
- Connect the Trigger output to the Gate Input of an Envelope to control Volume of you Oscillator.
- Set the Clock Oscillator Frequency to your desired speed.
- Press play!
- Play around with the per-step mult and mode controls to spice up your sequences!
- Use in conjunction with the MM-970B Sequential Switch and MM-970C Gate Sequencer for maximum control over your sequences!
Inputs, Outputs and Controls
From the left side of the MM-970A:
Clock Oscillator Frequency (Control Knob)- Controls the speed of the Sequencer Clock, but in different ways depending on the status of the SYNC switch.
- SYNC switch OFF: Changes the speed in Hz.
- SYNC switch ON: Changes the speed based on multiples of the DAW Sync
Time CV (Input Jack)- Controls the speed of the sequencer clock via a CV signal. If SYNC is on, this is ignored. Works on a 1v/Oct basis, so in HI Range mode, the sequencer turns into a oscillator, where the CV dials change the shape of the waveform. It will go out of tune at higher frequencies which is a side-effect of the way the sequencer works.
Sync (Switch)- When off, the sequencer uses it's own internal clock. When ON it syncs to the Host Application (ie. Voltage Modular in Standalone, or if used as a plugin it syncs to the DAW Tempo.
Ratchet (Switch)- Works in conjunction with the per-step multiplier controls. See MULTIPLIER
Range (Switch)- When set to ON (or HI), the sequencer is faster, and also tracks 1v/Octave to the Time CV Input, allowing you to use it as a correctly-pitched oscillator. When OFF (or LO), the sequencer is slower, and doesn't track to 1v/Oct.
Pulsewidth (Control Knob)- Alters the Length of the Gate produced by the Clock Oscillator as a percentage.
Start (Button and Input Jack)- Starts the sequencer. If syncing to your DAW, connect the PLAY output of Voltage Modular to this input jack.
Stop (Button and Input Jack)- Stops the sequencer. If syncing to your DAW, connect the STOP output of Voltage Modular to this input jack.
Centre section:
3 Rows of 8 Step CV Value (Control Knob)- Controls the pitch of each step in your sequence.
8x Multiplier (Control Knob)- With Ratchet mode OFF, these set the step length - i.e. x1 has a step length of 1, x2 has a step length of 2 etc.. With Ratchet mode ON, the step lengths are the same, but the TRIGGER output will retrigger, giving you those wonderful Tangerine-Dream ratcheted sequences you really wanted this sequencer for!
8x Step Mode (Control Knob)- 6 Modes:
- LAST: The sequencer will output the value of the previous step (i.e. if on Step 6, you will get the value of Step 5)
- NEXT: Skips a step
- RST: Returns to the start of the sequence
- STP: Stops the movement of the Sequencer (but not the Clock) so it will repeat on this step until you move the knob or press SHIFT.
- SEL. TRIG: Works as NORMAL but outputs a GATE at the SEL TRIG output.
- NORM: Standard normal step.
8x Gate Output (Output Jack)- Each step has a corresponding gate output which triggers a Gate when active. Great for triggering other modules.
Right Section:
3x CV Attenuators (A,B and C Control Knobs) - Multiplies the CV output signal by 1, 2 or 4.
3x CV Outputs (A, B and C Output Jacks)- The CV output from your CV Step Value controls.
Shift (Button and Input Jack)- Moves the sequence to the next step.
Sel. Trig (Output Jack)- Outputs a gate on each step change only if the mode on the step is set to SEL. TRIG.
Trigger (Output Jack)- Actually outputs a gate on each step change, the length of which is determined by the PULSEWIDTH control.
Reset (Button and Output Jack)- Resets the Sequencer to the first step.
