BEVERLEY - Advanced Fractional Bitcrusher
Beverley is a sophisticated digital bitcrushing effect that goes far beyond traditional sample rate reduction. It combines fractional bit-depth processing with gamma correction and advanced smoothing algorithms to create everything from classic lo-fi digital artifacts to smooth, musical quantization effects.
Key Features:
- Fractional Bit Depths (1-24 bits) - Unlike standard bitcrushers that only work with whole number bit depths, Beverley supports fractional values like 3.5 or 7.2 bits through intelligent interpolation between adjacent bit depths.
- Input Gain Adjustment - Input can be boosted by up to 20dB to match quantisation range, or auto-gain can be applied to track peak levels and maximise volume going into the bitcrushing effect. After bitcrushing, the applied gain is removed, restoring the original input level.
- Gamma Correction - Power-law amplitude mapping that redistributes quantization levels. Values below 1.0 allocate more resolution to quiet signals (compressor-like), while values above 1.0 preserve detail in quiet passages (expander-like).
- Musical smoothing - discontinuous jumps between quantisation levels can be smoothed to taste.
- CV Modulation - Both bit depth and gamma parameters accept CV input with adjustable modulation amounts, enabling dynamic bitcrushing effects.
- Stereo Processing - Independent left/right processing with mono-to-stereo capability when only the left input is connected.
Beverley transforms harsh digital artifacts into musically useful textures, making it ideal for everything from subtle vintage digital warmth to extreme lo-fi mangling. The combination of fractional bit depths, gamma shaping, and intelligent smoothing creates a bitcrusher that maintains musicality across its entire parameter range.
