Janus SUM
Polyphonic summing amp and stereo output stage · Vulpus Labs
Janus SUM is the end of the voice chain: it takes up to sixteen lanes of polyphony in and gives you two stereo lanes out. It is the instrument's summing amp, with the per-voice VCAs folded into it and a stereo field laid across the voices on the way past.
STEREO
VOICE SPREAD — fans the voices across the field by lane index. At CTR every lane sits at centre and the module is a mono sum on two jacks; turned toward WIDE, the lanes spread evenly across the stereo field. It greys out when a cable goes into FAN, because that engages a different stereo mode.
FAN and STACK WIDTH — Each lane's stereo position is given by the signal sent on that lane through FAN, and STACK WIDTH widens or narrows the spread. Patch in one of Janus Key's FAN outputs to spread stacked voices in stereo.
LAW — determines how left and right channels sum.
| what it does | |
|---|---|
| UNITY | a centred lane keeps its gain on both legs. One cable out of L is the whole mono sum, not half of it. |
| POWER | constant power: loudness holds across the sweep, at the cost of 0.707 at centre. |
GAIN
The per-voice VCAs. Three amplitude CVs are summed together.
ENV IN and GATE IN allow per-lane envelope curves, or GATE signals, to control audibility and volume.
VEL, AMT and VEL CURVE — velocity, per lane. A high setting on VEL CURVE makes soft notes louder.
MOD
For amplitude modulation effects - slow swells or fast tremolos. MONO and POLY inputs are summed together, and multiply the amplitude. If nothing is connected, modulation is skipped -- otherwise everything would be zeroed out.
LEVEL
The fader — a trim on the summed legs, with unity at half travel and twice that at the top. It is the last thing in the chain.
The meters, L and R — peak meters, with LEDs showing when the peak exceeds +/- 5 V.
The two auto-level buttons — press one and it works out what the level would have to be for the last few seconds' peak to land on a target, and moves the fader there. These are instantaneous rather than toggled: they're level-setting utilities, not controls for a compressor.
| target | for | |
|---|---|---|
| top | −3 dBFS | Leaves enough headroom that unseen peaks do not immediately go over. |
| bottom | +6 dBFS | Drives what comes next in the chain, e.g. Janus BBD, which will soft-clip it. |
CONNECTION
IN — the poly input.
OUT L (M) and OUT R — the two mono output signals. Use L (M) and take a single mono out if no stereo spacing has occurred.
