MatchMaker applies gain compensation to the return of an FX loop so that the perceived amplitude of the returned signal matches that of the input signal.

For effects with no time displacement component, such as filter, EQ, distortion, and dynamics processing, this can help maintain intended volume levels (for example during filter sweeps), and is useful for A/B-ing an effect without being misled by changes in volume. Additionally, by applying extra gain within the input loop, effects which are sensitive to input volume can be driven harder while their return output remains gain-matched to the input signal.

For effects such as delay and reverb, the gain-matching produces a result similar to gating a snare: reverb tails and delay echoes are gain-matched to the envelope of the input, and cut off when the input cuts off. This is the opposite of "ducking" (where the delay/reverb gain is dipped while the input signal is peaking), and produces a distinctive thickening effect while maintaining the envelope and rhythmic characteristics of the input signal.

MatchMaker can also be used to apply the envelope of one input source to another, for example matching backing vocals to a lead vocal, or applying the rhythm of a drum track to a synth pad. Instead of sending the input signal out to an effect, simply feed the second input source directly into the return channel and the module will output it gain-matched with the first.

Controls

ATTACK (1-50ms)

Sets how quickly the gain matching responds to increases in signal level. Lower values provide tighter tracking, while higher values create smoother, more gradual adjustments.

RELEASE (1-50ms)

Determines how quickly the gain matching responds to decreases in signal level. Shorter times track fast dynamics closely, while longer times provide more averaging and smoother gain changes.

SEND GAIN (-24dB to +24dB)

Adjusts the level of the signal sent to your external effects. Use positive values to drive effects harder while maintaining the same output level through gain matching. Use negative values to feed effects a lower level.

EFFECT MIX (0-100%)

Controls the wet/dry balance of your output:

0%: Completely dry (outputs only the gained send signal, bypassing gain matching) 100%: Completely wet (outputs only the gain-matched effect return) Intermediate values: Blend of dry and wet signals

Connections

IN (L/R)

Connect your audio source here. If only the left input is connected, the signal is automatically copied to the right channel for processing.

SEND (L/R)

Connect to the input of your external effects unit. The signal here includes any Send Gain adjustment.

RETURN (L/R)

Connect from the output of your external effects unit. This signal will be gain-matched to your input.

OUT (L/R)

Your processed audio output, with gain matching applied and mixed according to the Effect Mix control.
