The SEQ/Steps module is a compact 16 step sequencer with a gate/trigger output and a dedicated accent output. The gate times output can be set in divisions calculated from project BPM. The gate output also outputs triggers to sequence drummodules or reset LFO modules. The sequence length can be set from 1 to 16 steps making different sequence lengths possible when using more SEQ/Steps. This is quite useful for sequencing rhythm.

The conceptual idea is to use Steps, Blend and Peaks together along the Octagon Sequencer of Cherry Audio to design acid like basslines. Steps together with Octagon make accented steps possible. Use Blend to set the amplitude between the accented and normal steps.

The controls and their functions: from top to bottom:

  • Step buttons: The step buttons have three modes: off (grey), orange (gate/trigger) and accent (blue). When Gate/Trigger is active the gate/trigger for that step is passed through to the gate output. When accent is selected, both the accent and the gate/trigger will be passed though to their outputs.
  • Steps button: This knob sets the length of the pattern. the step buttons can be clicked or "click and dragged" which works quicker.
  • Time: Sets the time of the gate. At the 0 position "triggers" are passed through to the gate and accent out, at position 1 a trigger is passed through to the gate out but the accent envelope to the accent. At position 2 to 10 the accent envelope will be active at 200 ms and the gate divisions are: 1/32, 1/16, 3/32, 1/8, 5/32, 3/16, 7/32, 1/4, 9/32.
  • Trig in: This is the jack that receives triggers so the sequencer advances to the next step. When using Steps together with Octagon connect the "trig out" to "trig in" of steps. Steps advances when a trigger is received, the "traditional setup": sync-out -> sync-divider -> steps: will also advance to the next step and sync to your DAW.
  • Reset: Resets the sequencer to step 1. Use a play trigger from the i/o when syncing to the DAW.
  • Gate out: Outputs a trigger or gate accordingly to the "time" knob setting.
  • Accent out: Accent out is a dedicated peaky accent envelope at 200 ms. Use this jack to modulate filters for instance to get higher modulation when steps are accented. Accent also works for triggering accent on drum modules such as the Misfit ones.
